CASTING: WHY WE CASTED?

When looking into potential actors to play the first female character, we felt this role is extremely demanding both physically and psychologically due to the violent nature of this roles death; we took this into account when we began reaching out to potential cast.

After casting Meadow as our first choice for the first character introduced, we feel she is the perfect fit to depict this character and simultaneously brings unique attributions to the character in the telling of this narrative.

It was extremely important for our production group from the beginning to employ cast members who are of string acting ability as although our opening sequence relies on the narrative, mise-en-scene, camera composition, angles and movement and editing, it is extremely reliant on the acting abilities of our cast. Meadow is a brilliant actor and has proven to be comfortable on screen which has been another huge influence over our casting decisions; as her character is so demanding physically and psychologically through the gory death, Meadow offers a lot of theatrical skill.

Another fundamental aspect of our final decision to cast Meadow was based upon her ‘playing’ age; as our narrative follows a group of women captured and hunted, it was crucial to have a cast of more mature looking actors who would undoubtably fit the narratives conventions

To present a more diverse and inclusive looking opening, casting varying ethnicities was fundamental when asking people if they would like to act in our opening; Meadow offers this diversity through her look and implores to relating to wider audiences which is exactly what we strive for through our casting opportunities.

Casting our ‘hunters’ was a much easier process regarding the ‘specifications to follow’ when discussing potential candidates with my production group; when casting both Mike and Stu, we took into account of the approximate age of the characters they are playing, ranging from late 20s to early 40s.

The roles themselves are fairly demanding, especially regarding the second hunter who is killed by our protagonist. Both Stu and Mike fit into the ‘stereotypical’ hunter type ‘look’ which help to build the realistic approach of the opening's mise-en-scene and thus supports the narrative. Both Mike and Stu offer the ‘intimidating’ male dominance through their height and build which works to juxtapose our openings protagonist, who will be played by either Daisy Jelly or Zaza veyssiere which is yet to be determined. This contrast in builds between the two hunters and the two girls will elevate the power dynamics we want to get across within this narrative and to highlight the dramatic effect of the protagonist switching this at the end.
