WHAT IS A GENRE

 Genre is described as the way in which a media forum is categorized based on its concept and conventions and plays a crucial role in distinguishing institutions' target audience when advertising a particular product to market successfully. Genre is also crucial in playing into, and out of, the audiences' expectations of what they will watch/ buy and therefore helps the institution to make sure they include these expectations to adhere to the audience's wants.

There are three main types of genre: the main genre, subgenres, and hybrid genres

SUB-GENRES; Include a category within a category

Benefits= subgenres help the institution to further market as the audience becomes more defined and therefore the content is much more niche and means an audience's expectations are more accurate.

GENRE= HORROR

SUB-GENRE= SLASHER HORROR {The Babysitter}

HYBRID GENRE: this type of genre includes two or more types of main genres combined

Benefits= hybrid genres maximize the audience's expectation which simultaneously broadens the intuitions target audience and improves their marketing methods as it attracts more than one group. Another benefit of hybrid genres is that they can either play into expectations or completely subvert expectations, making it immediately more enticing to the audience's point of view.

GENRE1= Action

GENRE2= Comedy
